Goodbye NBA, Hello China

There are times in life that a new road presents itself and it appears this time has come for me now. I am so proud of what I have accomplished these past 15 years playing in the NBA. It was a dream entering the league as I just turned 18 years old. I worked hard and poured my heart and soul into this game. I consider myself a student of the game as I have watched, studied and played with and against the best players in the world. The NBA was my University and I learned so much. The gratitude I feel is really immeasurable. I have experienced the best moments a player can experience and have had some dark ones too. Both equally important in helping shape me into the man I am today.

As I leave the league for now, there have been so many profound people who inspired me along my way. I have to say thank you for guiding me and having an enormous influence on the way I played basketball. Isaiah Thomas, Rich Devos, Leslie Alexander and John Gabriel, you believed in me and I thank you. Jeff Van Gundy, you exemplified the brilliance of what a great coach is. Steven A. Smith, you gave us players a voice and for that I thank you. Doug Christy, Charles Oakley, Dee Brown, Mugsy Bogues, Antonio Davis, Dell Curry, Kevin Willis, you all showed a young kid from Auburndale Florida how to be a better player. Kobe, you made me work harder and it was an honor to play against you. And Yao, we shared an experience together that will always be with me, thank you. Sonny & Pam Vaccarro showed me how there is loyalty and genuine friendship in this business. Arn Tellem and Tim Hoy, 15 years and you are still my agents. Thank you for guiding me throughout my career. When all is said and done, there is so many that made an impact on my life. I am one blessed man to have the love and never ending support of my wife CleRenda and the best 4 kids a man can ask for. But most important, I give glory and thanks to God. It is thru Him that I have been so blessed and I am forever thankful.

As I enter this next chapter, I am excited to play for Qingdao Eagles in China. I have been to China several times in the last few years and I love the people and the country. It will be an honor to play for them. Thank you to every fan that has followed me and believed in me. Injuries and all, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I am proud of the mark I left on this game and am grateful to have been a part this league. It was a dream to play in front of all of you, each night, in every stadium. Thank you.

Tmac

Dontraa hutchins | on 17/10/12

Man I loved watching you as I was growing up. I had all of your gear and tried to imitate you in everyway as a kid and I still do today. I wish you could have won a ring because you worked so hard every night and its a shame but not all the great ones have rings. You are a gifted player and I hope to see you back in the nba one more time and maybe competing for a nba title …. I can see you still have the fire burning inside to compete for one but all I ask is to dont let it go out.

whoosh | on 17/10/12

You will be missed TMAC. I’m hoping I can catch some games on NBA TV while you are in China. Wish you the best in China, all the while hoping you return to the NBA for my selffish reasons. You’ll always be my favorite player; as you fill the walls in my tv room. Not just for your talent but for you unselffish play and your ability to make those around you better. Kudos to you and your future in China.

My favourite Player.
We will miss you.
From Argentina. Good Luck T-Mac(1)!!!

Bob David | on 16/10/12

After Michael Jordan retired from the game of basketball, I never thought I would enjoy watching another player as much as Jordan . Then you came along and I can tell you one thing , I loved watching you as much as watching Michael Jordan . Forget about Lebron , Kobe , Wade , Vince , Durant ,etc . None of them could make me think that they are better than you when healthy . Injuries took away one of the greatest talent to ever play the game . I’m glad you continue to fight through all hardships , that’s what life is all about . Good luck in China

Matthew R Giese | on 16/10/12

I do trust all the ideas you have introduced in your post. They are really convincing and can definitely work. Nonetheless, the posts are too short for newbies. Could you please lengthen them a bit from next time? Thank you for the post.

I wish you all the BEST. I’m definitely going to miss you on the NBA floor. Keep your head and doing what you do. You ARE AN AMAZING PLAYER as well as an AMAZING individual. I’ve always respected the way you played the game and stayed low key off the court. That’s the way to go. You would be a GREAT mentor to these young guys. Always a T-Mac fan.

Don’t be surprised if your teammate can not get easy points or make stupid mistakes , it’s CBA ,it’s Qingdao .Everyone will make mistakes.
But the boss is nice i think , and he will build the team ,the team will get better.
On the news your teammate are ecxited and looking forward to
work with you .Some of them have good skills .

seulee | on 13/10/12

Hey,Tracy!I heard that you will not wear number 1 again in China, what a pity!so, I expect that you choose 6 as your number in CBA,because in Chinese 6 is prononced just like “new” in American English ,which means you will have a new start in China.Believe me ,I’m your dead fan !!

larry mosquera | on 13/10/12

Man, those years that you played in NBA, youre simply SICK baller!! Will be very sorely missed you and bid you the best lucks to you when youre in China. May the Lord be with you, TMAC!

again, thank you for inspired to your fans.

Jeremy | on 13/10/12

The moment when you scored 13 points in 35 seconds to beat the Spurs…I will never forget it (sadly it was through a TV). You are by far one of the most entertaining players to have ever graced the floors of the NBA. Injuries may come and go, but your presence and the devastation you wrecked against opposing players will last forever on the highlight reels of Youtube. :]

黄冲 | on 12/10/12

Mad love for you Tracy! Thank you, you will always be the reason I love the game of basketball. You are hands down my favorite basketball player, if not athlete of all time. The way you carried yourself through the two straight scoring titles all the way through the injuries, truly makes you one of the games great class acts. I am happy that you are ready to start a new chapter in your life and always remember, your fans will always be here for you, no matter what. I hope China treats you well, now go average 25 a night and win yourself the championship that you’ve always deserved.

Waqas | on 12/10/12

Man my favorite player and I didn’t even know he has a twitter. I really loved his style of play so explosive. Never forget the half a minute comeback and man the dunk on bradley. So throwback one day I will meet you.

T-Mac you are that dude for Real .some time things don’t go our way and thats a shame .You are ine of the best player i ever saw in my life and i been around for a long time .player like gervin ,bernard king, Downtown freddy brown ,gus williams David thompson and Dr. J Chet Walker just to name a few .lots of negative stuff has been wrote about you and your injurys .means nothing to me . there alot of lesser player with contracts in the L today that i know you would Kill . i’m writing this because i’m mad that not one GM could not see away to give a spot on there team and treat you like the star you are .I seen you kill so many teams they should have called you Sir Graves. going to miss you hope you come back in time to help a team win the big one. always wanted to see you and Kobe on the same team WOW! that was my dream for the 5Yrs godd luck and go get them Mac!

sean | on 12/10/12

In Qingdao team , i think your main image is scoring and organizing/leading the team ,and this team will be stronger because you are here now .
Gradually you will know how to paly with your teammate and play against oppenents , just be patient, you will develop the skills again and accumulate your energy because you have time on the court, and through good communication and contact ,you will be a true part of the team ,and bring the team to a higher level ,that’s not so hard ..
Find way to keep healthy , you will success ,i mean not the final championship result ,but you will win the heart of us , no matter you back to NBA next year or not , you just like a hero , a worrior,a friend .
Those days many many news and expectation emerges ,also doults about your ability and mentalily , personally i hope you believe that most of us are friendly ,objective, and really hope you everything good .
Last, hope you get adaped to the new invironment and the social circle ,try some China stuff , and wish you love your life in China .

T-Mac is a super star .

miss your game badly.

Jim | on 11/10/12

T-Mac: I hope your time is not up in this league. When the CBA season wraps up, I hope you’re happy and healthy as a rotation player for an NBA playoff team. In the meantime, keep being one of the classiest players around. I remember that Slam interview where you talked about what players were like behind the scenes and said that there were homosexual players within the league. I don’t think many would have handled either topic with as much class as you did. I hope the Hall calls (and maybe a few rafters) when you eventually decide to hang up the high tops — and hopefully those high tops aren’t anywhere near the peg yet!

Rodge | on 11/10/12

You are one classy dude, T-Mac. God bless you in China and wherever you go!

İrfan | on 11/10/12

I’ll always watch you everywhere nba or others. Because I saw only one player, no teams or players only T-Mac !!

Kevin altidor | on 11/10/12

Hey T-Mac just wanted to say I’ve been a fan since when you first came into the league with Toronto and piled up crazy numbers with the Magic and gave us classic highlights that will be a part of NBA history (13 points in 35 seconds). Man I’m personally basis because that classic moment beats Reggie Miller’s classic against the Knicks in 95(crazy I was 5 years old then. Another thing is that when I reached high school I also played ball and watched study you and the way you played and attacked the basket. I can go on and on but it would be too long. I want to say this, outside of basketball I’ve picked up a particular thing from you and that is no quit attitude no matter how much the odds is against you, I’m proud to have looked up to you and follow you throughout the course of your career. In a few weeks I’ll be going under a similar surgery and rehab like crazy to get back ballin again and use that to push me beyond basketball. Do your thing in China and bring them a chip, looking forward and super excited to watch you play again. And maybe get that one on one! I’m proud of you bro do your thing! Pce

CT | on 11/10/12

Tmac, I just want to say thank you for all the little things you did that no one sees. Every extra basket you take after practice, every extra set you do in your workout, every extra film session you watch before an upcoming game, every game you play when trainers recommended you not to, and every time you took the high road when the media criticized you. We see the sum of all the little things on the court every night. You’re an inspiration to us in more than just the court and your letter shows we have still more to learn. We can’t thank you enough for the countless memories of basketball brilliance delivered with dramatic flare from the 45 second comeback against Spurs to your epic dunk over an unfortunate gentle giant on the Dallas Mavericks and your seasons of absolute dominance in Orlando. We wish you and your family the best of luck to your new adventures.

Vahag | on 11/10/12

Your NBA career has been just phenomenal!! Know you are loved in China, too, so I’m not surprised they want you there. Wishing you and your sweet family all the best! I’ve been a fan since first seeing you play in your early days with Toronto, and rarely ever missed any of your games since. You won my heart not only because you are an outstanding player but also a wonderful and kind person! Twice seeing you play in person against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis was a highlight. I was able to take several wonderful photos of you in the game and a close up on the bench, all of which I treasure.

Brian Cohen | on 11/10/12

Tracy, as a 40 year old fan of basketball, having grown up watching and playing it I’d like you to know that it was a thrill to be enthralled by your spectacular play. And, more than that, it is a pleasure to read your letter (this post) and realize your humility and graciousness in taking this next step in your life. I wish you and your family the very best. Thank you for being an inspiration as a player initially and as a standup guy now.

Thanks tmac

Nelson Du | on 11/10/12

13 points in 35 seconds.

“If we don’t win, it’s on me.”

Love you for both of those things, but more for the second one though.

Forgot you went to Darfur, but I donated through your link. Your basketball legacy might feel bigger, but in the end, that ends on the court eventually. What you do for them in Darfur lasts forever, because they’ll be able to help those who come after them in ways they wouldn’t ever have been able to.. I know you’re not done playing yet, but when you are, I hope the things you do off the court are better than anything you’ve ever done on it. We’ll be watching. Good luck in China.

p.s. I only own the jerseys of three players, yours is one of them.

It’s very sad to see that you’re leaving the NBA for now. You were truly an amazing player who has left an indelible mark in this league. I will never forget the game where you scored 13 points in 30 seconds against the San Antonio Spurs. I doubt that I will ever see a performance by a player like that in my life time, and I’m blessed to have witnessed such an historic event. With all those injuries, it was unfortunate that we couldn’t witness your full potentials, but we fans know that you are a Hall of Fame caliber player. Best wishes overseas in China! May God continue to bless you and your family!

<3 You always tmac. From the ride down the bulls back to Orlando offf the backboard. You and Yao together how about 13 in 33 to the 26 In new York vs the thunder. All of the alley-oops to the 4th quarter in Miami and the spin off peitrus in the playoffs. You are truly an awesome player no matter what position you played keep working hard your talent will always be special.

Very proud of the manner in which you constructed this letter. Hats off to CleRenda for her input. Please advise her that there is a possible typo at the end of your letter. It says, “...tohave been a part this league” I believe it should read…“to have been a part of this league’. When I go to work on Friday at Toyota Center I am going to take a phot next to yuor All Star Jersey in Mr. Alexander’s Suite in your honor. Best wishes and God Bless

Aeron Gerich Co | on 10/10/12

Hi T-Mac! Aeron here, your #1 fan since birth! I’ve been watching your games since the start of your career. I’ve been collecting your cards; from Toronto, to Orlando, to Houston….and even if you will be in China, I will still collect your cards. I will miss watching your explosive alley-oop dunks, sharp shooting fade away jump shots, tricky dribbling skills, extraordinary finishing touches and a whole lot more! You brought a lot of excitement into the game, which will be missed by many. I believe we will still see those in China. I’m looking forward to watch you play for the Qingdao Eagles in China. But I’m not close to hoping you’ll return to the NBA soon. Hopefully when you return, this time around, to a contender, one that can really compete for the championship. Take care and God bless always! I will be your #1 fan forever! T-Mac is T-Mac, and that can never be changed nor replaced. You proved to us your fans, for many times, that impossible is nothing.

Victor | on 10/10/12

Sydney Gustave | on 10/10/12

Thank you Tracy for it all. Fresh out of high school, u gave me a reason to watch each and every clip i could get my hands on. Everything you’ve done on and off the basketball court exemplifies what it means to doing it right. When ever i lace up, and lay hand to the rock, im thinking “T-Mac attack”. Its far from over; go kick ass out there….leave it out on the floor, and when you do come back to the league, let em all remember, who Tracy McGrady is was and always will be. them must’ve forgot, jog their memory. 1 love!

Pauly | on 10/10/12

We’ll miss you buddy!

Forrest Lan | on 10/10/12

Elegant T-mac, you show us the beauty of basketball game. And that’s why so many Chinese fans like me so crazy about this game show.
Hope you could do more and better to keep health. Body health is essential for revolution. Never waste your talents even the least. There would no more ones as great as you are.
Looking forward to your elegant show every night and happy life in China.

Your talent, your work, your effort, you have got up of every fall. I do not want that you worry for “ what had happened if “, only be happy. Happy since you me have done to my. Thank you very much. I will follow you always, all my life..

Ava Wynn | on 10/10/12

T-Mac, thanks for the letter, Im just glade you did what’s best for you and your family. You will be great in China, because you were great in the NBA. Stay strong and remember you have fans that love you.

HUANG Xiaoran | on 10/10/12

Hey Tracy ,I was really sad when I heard that you are going to play in CBA,eventhough I’m your Chiese fan,I know you are going to play for fans, for your dream ,not for money, but it always make me said, just like my world is destroied.Cause no one can give me a second T-MAC !I’m your Chinese fan,but I study in France now,I even prepare to catch the chance to do my internship in USA,and then I can see you play in your stage, and I’m going to tell your how much I love you.But now….just like I lost my way ,I don’t know what should I do ,what I did is just to make me better and I can stand in front of you and tell you proudly that I’m your fan,you said we are best fans.
I don’t know my feeling now,yes you have so many fans in China, they are looking forward that u can go to China, but I also know they do not want to see that you are out of NBA,that’s your place, that’s our place.you see AI?and Francis?you are a real star,so do them, but now….I don’t mean that I’ve no faith in you, just afraid,it’s really easy to lose yourself there.
BUT.I,we,respect your choice, cause it’s your life,we still can see you play, that’s enough for us ,we shouldn’t ask anymore.I can not go back to see your show,I also have my dream ,where I got so many courages to live abroad and deal with all my difficults??From you my hero,so ,you can say you are tird, but never say you can’t!
So,let me make a wish:China, plz go easy on him,my T-MAC,he is a good man.Tracy, try to be happy in China,I hope that I can see you soon.
I LOVE U!

Olivia

I LOVE YOU TMAC AND DONT WORRY YOU WILL FOR SURE MAKE THE HALL OF FAME YOU ARE THE BEST!

Justin | on 10/10/12

Tracy, thanks for the memories. It’s a shame you never played for my favorite team, though I always rooted for you. Good luck in China my man, I’m sure they’re going to love you.

Nasim | on 10/10/12

TMAC
You were the greatest player in the early 2000’s. I think for the most part us die-hard TMAC fans feel like we know you personally.

I own a jersey from Toronto, Orlando, Houston, NY and Detroit because I was a die-hard fan and mirrored my game after you.

I met you once at the garden during a knicks and rockets game and have my rockets jersey autographed.

I had so many fights with so many kobe fans about how much of a better scorer you were in your prime than Kobe.

I hoped this year that the knicks would sign you again but they signed Rasheed Wallace, which sucks.

You were my idol as a teenager, the kids on the block still call me tmac everytime I get a visit back to NY from overseas and beat them in some pick up games.

You are the epitomy of potential which was plagued by injuries. Still, we never should live life in regret.

I wish you the best of luck in China.

Peace and bring home that CBA chip!

Nic Tartaglino | on 10/10/12

Good luck Tmac! You have been my fav player for a long time and that will definitely never change! I hope you have success in China and show the NBA that they will regret not signing you! I LOVE YOU TMAC!

alonenomore | on 10/10/12

Your are the best! if not for injuries you are better than Kobe!

Jared Kurlander | on 10/10/12

T-Mac It is a sad day to see you leave the NBA. I stared really following basketball when you joined Houston and became a die hard T-Mac fan ever since. I used sneak the tv on in my room when i was supposed to be asleep so I could watch you and the rockets play. When I would shoot around in my backyard, I would try to emulate your signature leg kick jump shot. You are my favorite player of all time and I wish you all the best Tracy. Good luck in china.

Daniel Incer | on 10/10/12

You are the one of the best players in NBA history any time you are in miami you should email me so i can meet you!

Mitchell Schnyder | on 10/10/12

Thank you for your pull-up jumpshot to the right and for your unique blend of skills.
There are few other players in History with better body control or higher degree of difficulty shots than McGrady.

I became a basketball/Houston Rockets fan when Yao got drafted and I was thrilled when the Rockets traded for you.

Yao Ming, Tracy Mcgrady, and Jeff Van Gundy all day!
God bless you Mr Mcgrady and best of success on your next move.

Baris | on 10/10/12

Hi T-Mac,
I think that you are going to be the best but dont forget NBA too please. I think you are the best player in NBA. Please go back to USA soon :)

All these years Tmac, I have served you, you had great skill and talent, I couldn’t imagine anybody else that could score like you.

You are indeed silky smoove.

PLEASE, let you injuries stay aside, and fufill me with +30 points like nay other night.

I would say good luck, but you don’t need any because you sir have skill and talent.

Micah | on 10/10/12

Yo Tmac,

When I first fell in love with basketball, you were on the TV. Your dynamic moves, flashes to the basket, grace in dribbling and overall manner were so entertaining to watch. Although you never played for my favorite team, I always routed for you. I imagine battling through your injuries the past few years has been incredibly trying, but it has been great seeing you come back on the floor.

It was always very clear that you gave it your best go on the hardwood. Although you leave the NBA without a championship, you will be remembered for your catchy style and basketball charm.

Thanks for being you and best of luck in future endeavors.

Christian Salazar | on 10/10/12

Despite all the hate that you get, you are still my number one fan. You dont get any respect but you know what, its not about that. Its about your legacy, and that lies with you and your children. Raise them up, teaching them about God and His word.I hope that God gives you peace in everything that you do. And I wish you the best of luck!! Also if theres a way to watch your games online, please let me know!! And come back to the NBA PLEASE!!! lol you still got some good years in the tank, if Jordan could play at forty then you should be able to play too.

Ricky Bowen | on 10/10/12

Tracy, I’ve been a fan since you were in Toronto. When I was in 8th grade, that’s when you were killing the NBA averaging 28/6/6. I’ve spent my entire basketball career idolizing you to the point I’d even refer to you as my father lol. I’m going to miss your presence in the league more than a lot of these people, T. I felt so close to you, from the coaching problems to fighting off hecklers talking about your injuries. It brought me so much joy last year in the playoffs when you dunked on Ryan Hollins and Mickael Pietrus. Or also when you single-handedly beat the Heat in the 4th quarter, like old times. Please, Tracy…I know you can still lead a regular NBA team; show them what you’re capable of and come back PLEASE.

Ricky Bowen, 21 years old

NO t-mac! because you want to give the NBA? you are the best player I’ve ever seen, you may be far greater than kobe. OK, I accept your withdrawal. You have been, for me, and always will be .. the greatest player ever born, you were the one to give birth to a passion for basketball inside me, unfortunately I live in Italy and here the basketball is not highly regarded, and I must admit, I’ve never been a great player, but every time I saw your video, your own deeds, let us remember the 13 seconds, you gave me the strength to improve and in fact, it was so, I improved a lot, I will remember you as the number’‘ 1’‘ in the NBA, now go in china and show everybody who’s T-MAC! Plz, read this or get this to my idol, T-mac!

Hope u actually read our comments! T-mac was the most fun player to watch! His skill level was just beyond anything the NBA has seen at the time! Made the game look so easy and inspired of a lot of guys in the league today (also a bunch of regular ballers like myself to emulate ur game in the gym)! It’s a shame the next generation will probably never know who you are years from now but i’m just glad I became a fan early, before injuries hit u. Hope u actually ball out in China and not sit in the corner. Work on that killer instinct & come back by Playoff time. Need one last glimpse of “T-Mac” before u retire. Thanks for the memories, and ur welcome! It was because of my prayers that u made 13 points in 33 secs! lol

Tmac

I grow up watching you play basketball and everyday I would play I would I’m T-Mac even in college even tho I never got to meet you. You made me a better basketball player and a better person by the way I seen you Handle yourself on and off the court you will forever be my Favorite player of all time and I wish you the best

Jabari Briggs | on 9/10/12

Hey Tmac,
My name is Jabari and I’ve always been a big fan of yours from the time I first noticed you in Toronto (still wish I had that jersey to go with your rookie card lol). I still remember how happy I was when I found out you would be playing for my favorite team in Orlando. Been a Magic fan since the Hardaway and Shaq days. Yea it sucked seeing you move on to another team, but it happens. Regardless you continued to be my favorite player in the league with some memorable moments like the 62 point game you had and not in a magic jersey….like the 13 points in 35 secs. in Houston. CRAZY!! I remember when I was played ball I wanted to play like you. Didn’t quite work out for me though so I’m pursuing my graphic design career, Despite no longer playing, you still have had an impact on me seeing what you have done off of the court over the yrs. From the amazing gesture for the young boy that was also a big fan in the hospital yrs ago to Darfur. It’s great to see that my favorite player is also a great person at heart. It was a pleasure watching you throughout your career, too bad I couldnt see you finally getting that ring you deserve. I wish you the best in China. You will be missed.

Dao | on 9/10/12

TMAC, it was really a shock that you finally proved that you will play for Qingdao. What is fortunate is that all enthusiastic Chinese fan of you can really see you play on court in China since last China game where you were still in Huston. But to be honest, I really like you, enjoy the time that you are playing in NBA, and wish you a good future, however I do not want you to come to play in China. Too many things will be unexpected, and the important thing is I think there still will be teams in NBA interested in you. Is that really no possiblity to reconsider it?

ramdom | on 9/10/12

ill be watching you play bro good luck and enjoy

Alex Roig from www.nowthatsthunderbasketball.com | on 9/10/12

Ian | on 9/10/12

T-Mac, you will be missed. Wish the Knicks kept you. REAL dudes know that you still have an immense amount of talent left..if only they had given you the playing time you deserved. You are the man Tracy

I love you ,but do not come please!

SGhoops4life | on 9/10/12

I started playing ball when i saw your “T-Mac2” commercial on air. I didnt know a thing about what basketball is. You made me love the game so much.

When i go out play ball still using those spin jumpers, shammgod stepbacks, post spin into left handed reversals, behind the back turnaround j blablabla you know your signature moves anyways.

What i meant was you leave your mark in the game that will be forever remembered. 13pts in 33secs, off the glass dunks are unforgettable.

You were a childhood hero for me i stick with you thru today watching your every single game making highlights posting them over web to share with fellow Mac fans.

One dream that i had was watching you play live in NBA. I’m planing to do it next year but this road ends in a sudden for you.

I hope you will do it like the Mac of old out there in China. Make those fans happy man. Dunk when you have to and dont be shy to throw it off the glass. It’s your thing! Hope you get in Hall of Fame. You deserved it well before your surgery. Hope you stay healthy and teach your son how to do that thing! Huge respect and love.
