Tracy Receives Community Assist Award for January

NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2008 – In recognition of Tracy McGrady’s outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic work, the NBA has honored the Houston Rockets guard with the Community Assist Award for January.

After a trip he funded to war ravaged Darfur this summer, Tracy McGrady was so moved; he knew he wanted to do more to help the youth there. In a special assembly at his alma mater, Auburndale High School (FL) on Jan. 3, McGrady announced his participation in the “Stand Up for Darfur” humanitarian project with a donation of $75,000 which will be used to renovate and assist in the building of a school in the Djabal Camp, in Eastern Chad.

McGrady spoke to the students about his experiences during his trip to Darfur and also previewed a documentary he is working on which chronicles the trip in an effort to educate people on what is happening in Chad and Darfur.

“It feels great to be able to give back and make a difference by helping those who are less fortunate,” said McGrady. “I have been blessed, and my wife and I want to use what we have been given to help others.”

To raise funds for education of Sudanese refugees, McGrady has formed the “T-Mac Alliance” which will work alongside other notable charitable groups such as ninemillion.org to raise money to train teachers and provide school materials, clothing and other essentials for students.

This effort in Africa is a continuation of what McGrady, through the Tracy McGrady Foundation, has been doing to give back to the community. In July of last year, Tracy and his wife CleRenda, dedicated a reading and technology center at Ross Elementary School, located in the Kashmere Feeder System of the Houston Independent School District. The Tracy McGrady Foundation funded the renovation project with $150,000 raised from the 2006 T-Mac Softball Classic. The mission of the Tracy McGrady Foundation is to empower, encourage and enrich the lives of all youth by promoting education and literacy. The Foundation aims to challenge all youth to reach their optimum potential in life – to go beyond the ordinary and to become extraordinary

McGrady will receive the David Robinson Plaque with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece.” In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 donation will be given to the Tracy McGrady Foundation – for the Dafur Project, on McGrady’s behalf.

The league presents the NBA Community Assist Award monthly to recognize players for their charitable efforts. The award honors the NBA player who reflects the passion that the league and its players have for giving back to their communities.

Lecily | on 27/2/08

Dear Tracy,
I must write to you, i was so shocked by Yao’s injury. i know how tough it is right now, and i know how much hope you had for this season before that bad news. But it just happened, no matter how disappionted we feel. So it is all in your hands now, Tracy. yes, i know the game can become really difficult without Yao, but i believe and will always believe you are the one who should and who can take over the game.
So cheer up , T-MAC, be a fighter.
not to prove just to enjoy, enjoy every time you stand on the court and show your rival how much you wanna win.
Take your will into the game and you are unbeatable. I BELIEVE.
Yours forever,
Lecily

t-mac i am so angry. not that you went 4 for 15, but the fact that you were so passive for three quarters. You looked as if yao ming was going to come back into the game. Yao is gone, but we have you and still gives us a chance. please dont give up on the rockest

mj | on 26/2/08

t-mac this is not the time to be passive. dont go through three quarters trying to get everybody invovled. you set the tone. Play like you played in the 4th quarter. just attacking the basket. Everybody knows we make the playoffs, if you assert yourself night in and night out.

Hi Trae | on 26/2/08

I really hate that Yao is out but tonight it looked like you have your squad pumped up…..Dikembe no joke…..go ROCKETS ...15 more days before I get to see you guys jam in the ATL...please don’t forget my autograph, jersey or something…of yeah and how about a win this time…keep on keepin’ on…
LOVE your #1 fan from Germany…ANGELIKA

jj | on 26/2/08

t-mac your legacy is about to be determined in about 30 ballgames. If u beilive you can carry this team, thinka about it, kids will be looking at this as like man tracy carrried the rockets all the way to the playoffs and past the first round without yao ming. t-mac it is no holding back now. the fate of the rockets is in your hands, just becuase yao ming went down does not mean the rockest have to go with him.You said it yourself you have proven that you are a scorer in this league. T-mac we need that now.“this is your finest hour”

mj | on 26/2/08

t-mac it is in your hands now. i feel bad for yao and i feel bad for u. just when things were going to well. The rockets need for you to step up. take control and lead this team night in and night out. i know you can do it.You are going to have to be more determined than ever

Marvin | on 25/2/08

Man, you’re one of the players who are so philanthropic. Just continue helping the unfortunates… you shall be printed forever in NBA history for doing those. Also, continue your aggressiveness… It’s been a long time since I saw you in aggressive-mode; I can see it in your eyes. Just don’t overdo things (like monster dunks)... as you can see, your body’s betraying you sometimes.

Go on with it and steal from LeBron James the scoring champ title.

Marvin, the Philippines

Boe Araya | on 25/2/08

Hey Tracy! sup this is Boe Araya from Dallas, Tx. My cousin in Houston met you and took a picture with you about a month ago. Shes ethiopian and her name is Betty. She said that she told you that I look just like you. Well I just want to let you know that I look just like you. People started saying that I look like you since I was in middle school. Matter of fact, last year I was at the Houston Rockets autograph/ open practice session, and fans were asking me if I was your brother!!! I got Steve Francis’ autograph and even he said that I look like you!! Dikembe hook my cousins up with tickets(since they’re ethiopian) and he has one of my cousins number. So please ask Dikembe if you can talk to my cousin Betty so that we can arrange something and meet each other. I am about 6’8 as well (6’7 3/4). I just want to meet you man and see my twin. lol If you have time, please email me at abdaf5@aol.com

mj | on 24/2/08

t-mac you are my hero right now. i have never seen you attack the basket so much. you went 7 for 13 against the bulls and still managed to get 24 points becuase you kept drawing the foul. please keep this up for the rockets

Fan from Croatia | on 24/2/08

Hi Tracy! I’m so glad that you’re back and that you are amazing! Keep in that tempo… I think that if you play like that in playoffs that Houston have a chance to do something more… Prove everybody that you’re NO.1… Thanks T-Mac… I’m you fan and you’re the best!!!

mj | on 24/2/08

t-mac i know you see it. the rockets are right in the playooff picture i know i need to tell you that. the only thing i hope you do is to continue to attack . I see you are very motivated and it is showing. just dont take anything for granted. like you said, look to start the game attacking and see how the defense reacts

is t-mac attack all the way to the top n no one aint stoopn ya!hate it or luv it.

timmy | on 20/2/08

mj i am with you. t-mac have you ever talked with adelman about this. i mean i know you see us fans as just well fans, but really, you have to admit when you get the ball at the high post or low post you are more efficient scoring

jj | on 20/2/08

you know mj is right t-mac. when you get the ball on the low post almost 95 percent of the time you find a way to score.

mj | on 20/2/08

hey t-mac, why doesnt adelman allow you to set up on the low blocks. i think that area is where you are most effective. i just dont understand why you dont set up in that part of the court more often.

mj | on 19/2/08

hey tracy, nice game on tuesday. i know i know you didnt shoot particularly well but hey we just got back from the all star break, of course you are not going to be in rythm, please keep the aggressivness up, dont let tuesday’s shooting bring you down. its okay.

Angelika | on 19/2/08

Hi Trae

I dont care what everybody says, I believe in the Rockets! we are playing great basketball, the biggest diference from past years, we are playing as a team! Im telling you, we are a scary team! and when tmac is a 100%, you will see the results, remember, before he got injured, he was leading the league in ppg (29.0), and we were 6-1, and now that Scola, Alston and company are playing great, watch out! To every Rocket fan, this is our time! And Tracy if your reading this (I really hope you are) I trust you with all my heart, I have been your fan since your Toronto days and I have never question your passion and heart for the game and your team, I know you and Yao can guide this team to the playoffs and make a deep run, this is your time T-Mac, now everything is clicking, its time to show the whole nba and world want kind of basketball machine you are, its starts tomorrow at Cleveland, your championship road starts tomorrow!

Although many people don’t like you ,
don’t want u to play ,
i am still your fans ,
I will support you forever ,
to meet you is my dream :)

Angelika | on 11/2/08

Hi Trae….I think it is great what you are doing for the community and the world. I always knew that there was a soft spot behind that cool image you always portrait. But like so many people you have been in the NBA for many years , so apparently this is your dream. Don’t give up on that…you can do it. I hope for your sake that everyone around you and close to you is supporting you in living your dream. You know I grew up with 12 brothers and sisters so I am really modest and know what it is like to come from so little, but there was always a lot of love and attention for all of us.I would not even know what to do if I became rich and famous. The only thing I would love to happen is to meet you and get your autograph that would be my dream…anyway getting ready to watch the Rockets smack Portland around a little bit…so I guess I will see you in the ATL...please be nice and give an autograph if you hear someone scream at you…good luck..oh yeah by the way you have the ammunition to go all the way…..GO TRAE
